Buxton FC 0 v 3 FC United of Manchester:
It was a much anticipated trip to Manchester this weekend. Buxton away, often the scene of much giddy activity, marches, heaving trains and erm…pigs heads, but sadly a fixture I’d never been able to go to previously.
Still nursing minor hangovers from the previous night, we bought our Wayfarer tickets (an amazing discovery by D.), and, accompanied by the police (probably due to rumours of S. and his new druggy habits - “Cocaine 1 You lot 0”) and the odd familiar face, headed to the Derbyshire spa town.
Our pub of choice for the day was the Baltane, an odd but pleasant mix of pub and café, with a real fire and a good range of beers & ales. We spent the late morning and early afternoon there, drinking away and catching up. We were also joined by a couple of friends who support Ipswich Town, but due to living in the North, and liking what we do, occasionally come and watch FC. Most of us headed to the ground for kick-off, where we were treated to a decent performance, a 3-0 win and a few flares and smoke bombs to boot. The funniest moment of the match, was when the police came into the away terrace to stop one flare. An older lad, was caught red handed, holding the thing aloft, face not covered, and didn’t seem the slightest bit fussed. With good reason it would appear, the police told him to put the thing down and that was the issue dealt with. Pleasantly relaxed policing!
After the game had finished, we headed back to the Baltane and carried on drinking. As barrels began to empty, there was talk at one stage of heading back to Manchester. A quick glance across the room just showed a sea of faces of friends, some you see regularly, others these days, for various reasons, less regularly at the match. Men, women, young and old, all wasted and having a great time. It was too good for us to want it to stop, so we stayed. Even waking up, having slept on an armchair in a kitchen, and the long journey home, didn’t take anything away from a wonderful weekend. FCUM are the best!

FCUM A.D. Established 2009. Yeah, I know what you are thinking, FC United of Manchester was established in 2005, not 2009. Well here Im talking about FCUM A.D., that is a blog (the very blog you are currently clicking about on) and some (but not all) of the activities documented within.
Whats it all about? Getting off your arse and doing something. Not watching the match in the pub, not even just turning up once in a while to the ground, but dedicating time to pushing things on a notch. Whether its knocking out fanzines, running radio shows, producing banners and choreos for matches or running around town late at night making the walls and lampposts look prettier with football club related stickers, paste ups, graffitis or tags.
The A.D. is short for Art Department, thats vague enough to incorporate plenty. This blog started out concentrating just on the stickers and streetart bit, but it likes to cover other things too. As the Germans would say "blick über den Tellerrand". Is it all Grade A? Probably not, but as Minor Threat sang "You tell me that I make no difference. At least I'm fuckin' trying. What the fuck have you done?" :-D
